Try using fixed, imo, if you can find them. They do a bit more damage and the gimballed ones sometimes fire all over. I just replaced my fully kitted Adder for the Cobra (shame it doesn't have the Adder's style) - I found the Adder to work great with a gimballed medium beam to strip shields and two fixed autocannons to take care of the rest of the ship which are on another button. I found it to be a very good and dependable NPC bounty hunter.
It will be interesting to see how will the Cobra fare in the same role.
