Burst lasers are the best choice for turrets imo. They more damage than pulse, don't waste ammo like cannon and multi-cannon, and let's not even talk about frag cannons for turrets because that's just a dumb idea.
They're better than beam too (unless you use multicrew) because the AI shows no restraint over their use - it'll fire from far away pointlessly until your distributor charge is used up, disabling it and your other energy weapons too.
Burst on the other hand are more of a leave-on-and-forget weapon. Which is exactly what I want from turrets.
