Most of the time I circle fairly close to the planet/moon indicated; down in the Mm range and just fly a few orbits.  The exceptions being stars and ringed planets where you have to maintain a greater distance for your own safety.  I used to pass in straight lines and I'd be spending a crazy amount of time trying to find my target.
