I disagree. I custom-designed mine for deep space exploration and I found it fits me better than the Asp X despite the lesser number of internal modules.

Mine has 52.04 jump range, can carry 16 tons of cargo, has a size 4 fuel scoop, advanced discovery scanner, detailed surface scanner, planetary vehicle bay, shield generator, heat sinks.

"Fat and heavy" slots on explorers are good for large fuel scoops that enable them to fill their huge fuel tanks fast.

The only reason you'd ever want an AFM is if you're supercharging your FSD and even then you gotta do it many times before you actually cause significant damage. Perhaps you actually want something for long range travel rather than deep space exploration?

Your so-called "design incompetance" [sic] serves the purpose of accomodating modules for purposes other than exploration, which is part of the design concept of the ship.
