As far as I know there is no need to unlock Professor Palin in order to see this.  You just need to find an Unknown Probe, then go to any alien ship crash site (the easiest way to get an Unknown artefact), and then go the the Thargoid surface site.  Corrosive resistant cargo racks will help but people were able to fly around with UA's and UP's in their cargo hold without corrosive resistant racks for a long time by using Auto Field Maintence Units (AMFU's).  UA's were being carried around under 1000 ly distances before the corrisive resistant cargo racks were added to the game.  So if you don't feel like unlocking Palin, just equip at least 2 AMFU's (so they can repair each other), then go get the UA and UP.
