These PDTs do not do a lot in the way of protecting you, if the aggressor is close to your ship. I had a Vulture come close to my Cutter and it fired Rockets and Torpedoes at me with the PDT unable to shoot down any of them, eventhough there was perfect line-of-sight. The PDT did not even bother engaging the torpedos fired at close range.
