Under the new mission system changes introduced in v1.6/2.1, when a mission requires a salvage item and says it is unique, it means that they must come a signal source with the "Mission target" label.
For missions which requires salvage from a planetary surface, you will either be given the specific planet in the target system in advance or will recieve a message giving the planet name after arriving in the target system after performing a discovery scan or after scanning the nav beacon. You will then need to supercruise towards that planet. Once close enough you will be able to select a mission signal source from the navigation tab. You will then need to approach the signal source as it changes its location starting from before orbital cruise and after orbital glide ends until the signal location becomes "confirmed" at which point land at the nav marker and collect the cargo. The cargo at this site will be the unique cargo the mission is asking for.
For missions which require salvage from deep space, you will either be given the specific planet in the target system in advance or will recieve a message giving the planet name after arriving in the target system after performing a discovery scan or after scanning the nav beacon. You will then need to supercruise towards that planet. You do not need to enter orbital cruise on this planet but you do need to remain in supercruise at a close distance to the planet (usually under 1 ls). Continune in supercruise and check all unidentified signal sources that appear. Eventually you will come across one that will come have a Mission target label on it. Drop from supercruise into this Mission target signal source and then collect the cargo. The cargo at this site will be the unique cargo the mission is asking for.
Hope this helps.
