Once you get 300-500 light years out from the 'Bubble' (known space, the settled part of the galaxy, whatever) The only real risk to your ship is crashing into a star or planet. In that sense, the lesser pay seems reasonable. That said, it still seems awfully paltry for the amount of time spent. As a way of making money quick, Exploring is definitely the worst 'career choice' for burgeoning pilots. On the other hand, in deep space it's the safest way to make money without getting blown up. Of course, you need to make it home to sell your data... and dying destroys any unsold data you've gathered.
