After reading this a few times I finally understand how the Life Support sytem works.  You must have ONE and it provides infinite Life Support while your canopy is intact.  The times stated here are for an EMERGENCY oxygen supply in mm:ss for if your canopy is breached.  I've always thought the times were in hours and minutes and you can only travel for up to 25 hours.  Armed with this and the knowledge you can save even in open space, I can now start exploring the galaxy, once I've wiped all the egg off my face.
