Think of it like this - you're walking along at night and you find a load of blood and teeth on the street, and there's a bloodstained wallet lying there too. You pick up the wallet and a few minutes later the police pull you over and find the wallet. You'd not get very far trying to claim the wallet was 'salvage'.
