Well, when it comes to interception, it is pretty much over when the target jumps to another system. he is then pretty much impossible to track down, no matter what. 

By the time you pop into the system he jumped into, he has probably already jumped at least one or more systems ahead and can't be tracked down without a LOT of effort (which generally isn't worth it). 

Not to mention that traders often fly in anacondas, which have THE longest jump range in the game. Good luck tracking that down once it jumps.
