You dont join any of the three factions. You are a free-lance merc in the elite universe. You can do whatever it takes to earn credit and respect but you need side with anyone 100%.

Hense why you able to rank up in any of the factions and benefit of the factions. I think the rank system is a little misleading as your gaining access to provisions rather having a standing in their army.
