Year is 3301, most powerful sensors can detect ships up to 8km.

Year is 2015, most powerful RADARs can detect things up to several hundred km. (?)

I understand it uses passive thermal signatures detection but jeeze... Why for the love of god aren't we able to use some good ol' RADAR? (Gameplay reasons obviously, but that's silly IMO) 

There's so much advantages of using an active electromagnetic detection & ranging system... Especially in space!
