I ran a Plasma Accelerator and a Pulse Laser for giggles. I tried the rail gun too. I used a gimballed pulse laser as the primary weapon, and for anything cobra sized and smaller, a single class 3 pulse laser will do. Sidewinders/Eagles/Adders are grapes ( easy to squash ) and from cobra/clippers/jumpship I don't even lose my shield. I have solo'd pythons/fer-de-lance/anacondas but was limping back to port. With some assistance, they're as easy as a clipper, and assistance meaning just other targets for the big ship to divide firepower to. I thought the big guns would work great on the big ships, but found that I can just run 2 class 3 pulse lasers and get more "time on target" and it takes less time to bring them down. Python and up, subtarget the power core. With 3 pips in wep, .5 in the other two, I can kill a python, shields and all, without running out of juice. And you'll have trouble with hitting smaller ships with just a plasma accelerator/cannon combo. If you only go after big ships, you'll be ok. But if the big ships have escorts, you'll easily slay the big behemoth, and be killed by the little gnats that you can't hit. I've never found a class 3 burst laser, and the class 3 beam laser is so power hungry, I couldn't justify keeping it. You get like 2 seconds of on-time before it locks up/overheats... whatever. The cannons are great, less power hungry, but only hold 100 ammo, and hitting a fast target can be difficult. Multi-cannons are ok, bigger mags, but less dam. The plasma accelerator is really tough for a small ( even a large ) ship. There's a delay from the time you hit the trigger till the plasma flies. Like it's "charging up" or something. Then there's a big hit on heat. The rail gun is much faster initially, pull the trigger, and it fires. But there's a reloading interval. Both the weapons don't seem to have enough of an impact given the price/cost/expense of using it vs. the damage they do. Plus I assumed there would be pieces of the target ship flying off/smoking/sparks... big damage should show big fireworks... nada. The round hits the target very sedately. Plus the ammo for those things is crazy per shot!
