So based on the information here:

- reducing a ships mass while keeping the same-class-shield-generator effectively increases shield strength;

=> therefor equiping hull reinforcements will decrease your shield strength (due to the big increase in mass).

In exchange you increase the durability of your hull. To bad we don´t have any real numbers to work out the best combination.
