It depends on what ship your running and your play style but in general I think multi cannons are more effective all round. Cannons are good for cracking armor on large craft without the heat of rail guns and p-acceleraters. That's about it though. It's near impossible to hit an eagle with them. If you do they are going feel it big time though.
