You should be able to make Squire to Baron in a day if you concentrate on it. If you already have an Empire trade route you should be near ally at both ends so you get cheap refuels and good spread of missions. Take all the non-combat ones you can, the 1hr time limit coourier runs are easiest. You are unlikely to get offered the Baron Naval Ascension mission if you only have good standing with two minor factions, so you will need to go to a third system and run missions there also. You can get lucky if a lot of the missions you run from your A or B systems end up in the same place for the same 3rd faction.
After the two combat missions (kill the rogue clipper and kill 5 pirates), the Baron mission was a rather uninspiring "Here is 2t of corn, go deliver it 7LY away!"
The Clipper is lovely to fly, in a totally different way to the Asp. The Asp used to whisper in my ear to chase every USS so it could unleash death and fury on wannabe pirates. The Clipper gently reminds you that you are a different class now and it is not the done thing to get involved in fisticuffs as you glide by :)
