And here I am, accidentally stumbling on my old post from 4 years ago. As expected, nobody could give a satisfying answer.
To the April 21, 2017 reply:
I don't mean to be rude, but when your answer to 'what it has to do with quantum mechanics' begins with 'according to Einstein's general relativity', the only logical conclusion here is that you have no idea what you are talking about. You are absolutely right to say that you have little knowledge about the topic. Time to go revise on the basics of modern physics.
To the March 26, 2019 reply:
That is not what 'discrete' means. According to the equation, the total amount of fuel consumed is directly propotional to the p-th power of distance travelled, which is continuous a.k.a. not discrete. Say we take a hypothetical distance from your starting position, break it down into infinitely many points, then every single point on that distance is a valid destination. Drop a star on any of the infintely many points and the FSD will take you there because that's how it works in the game. Compare this to the real life example of 'discrete' in quamtum mechanics: an electron bound within an atom, where the electron can only occupy certain energy levels and everything in-between is outright forbidden. There is no such in-between distances where the FSD would fail because the amount of energy required is not allowed, because it is, again, continuous a.k.a. not discrete.
At this point, I believe that whoever wrote the line was just pulling science jargons out of his/her own posterior, especially since there is no citation to any in-fiction sources whatsoever. I'm going to delete this misleading eyesore if I can.
