I used to think the added range would be wonderful - until I got them. It sounds good in theory to have fragments ready and waiting before you get there but practically speaking the added range slows down collection significantly.

The advantage gained in distance is entirely offset by the lower performance relative to simply using a class 2 laser and additional heat limitations.

Neither of those would be a problem however if it weren't for the slow speed of the limpets. Starting that far out actually causes them to take substantially longer to collect. The other comment in this thread mentions hating to nose up the the rock, but that's absolutely mandatory to speed up limpet collection. Not doing so cripples your mining performance by far more than the gain from the lance's range.

I am able to approach and often exceed 9 tones per minute while mining without using an asteroid map. 45 minutes in the ring exceeds 400 tons of painite. In 60 minutes station to ring to sell station I am able to exceed 315 million credits.

My best run? About 59 minutes from 0 to 522 tons painite (in ring time, travel time still added 11 minutes). This resulted in me reaching a total of 70 minutes dock to dock for just over 400 million. 344 million/hr rate.
