Everything has to have a downside.  You get more armor, but pay a penalty in weight.

It doesn't add up to that much, at least for larger medium ships like a Krait.  On the other hand, you can over-armor lighter small ships, like an Eagle, until they're no faster than some medium ships, like an FDL.
