Trading is a bit boring, though I find it far less boring than mining, at least.  I don't recommend trading until you can afford at least a Python, at which point it becomes a very, very effective way of making money.  Just do boom time deliveries of up to 180 tons of Imperial Slaves (for Empire rank) or Palladium (for Federation rank or if you hang out in Alliance territory).  Don't bother with Independent minor factions... they're a waste of time as it takes twice as long to get them to allied (provided you're allied with the three superpowers, which you should be).
