Small ships are not to be underestimated.  With small hitboxes, high agility, and extreme time on target, dangerous ranked and above can easily outmaneuver a poor commander whose only thought to capabilities lie in spreadsheets and numbergaming.  Add in railguns, sidewinders go from nuisance to danger at higher ranked NPCs in a wing.

On top of this, NPCs utilize a totally different behavior set when fighting PCs, that turn the game into turning spees or jousting matches.  Considering the raw agility of the sidewinder and damage potency of railguns and the like, they're not to be considered lightly.

And let's be real here.  Flying big ships is slow and monotonous and near every ship size up is a further decrease in feedback and gamefeel.  In terms of game feel absolutely nothing tops small ships, and the sidewinder being so maneuverable only adds to it.  The only thing that changes is the big numbers you can put on your ship.
