Well, you have the choice between Imperial debt slavery and Federal wage slavery, with Senators instead of Megacorps.  Interestingly enough, if you convert the cost of maintaining a slave into GDP, slaves make a much higher income than minimum wage workers.  The Empire is just more honest about it than the Federation and their sugar-coated "enlightenment."
