You don't have to land on planets blindly any more, if you launch a probe while in orbit you'll find geological results, select a hotspot, land near by and your surrounding area will be filled up with goodies.  If you land on an edge of the circle it might make it easier to know when you've scopped the lot as it should lead you back to your ship.

Just found out about it yesterday.

I wish FDEV would update their digital manual.
