It makes sense as sound is a very important resource for the human mind. It helps to alert it of things happening around it. By simulating what everything would actually sound like if there was atmosphere. it allows the mind to be more alert.

That and a nearly completely silent box flying through space could cause alot of people to become stircrazed. Its technically a way of resolving that issue.

Then again. its also to help players that are not into the super realisticness of space to cope with it.
