Caustic damage is the type of damage that you take after being struck with a caustic missile, not the damage you are referring to I don't think. Caustic damage, once applied, will continue to eat away at your hull until you do one of three things: land at a station, use a decontamination limpet to remove it, or overheat your ship untill it literally "cooks" off. Caustic resistance will be applied to this damage just as thermal or kinetic resistance is applied to lasers or cannons.
