Usually the expedition sets a target waypoint for the expedition. Any ship can participate however keep in mind that with low jump distances you aren't going to get there as efficiently.

You can succesfully dock and land on moons/metiorites and with the horizons expansion, even drive around them. 

Further on equipment. You won't need much in firepower however travel equipment is necessary.

Main equip:

- thrusters above 3A

- Fuel Scoop above 4A

- Heat sinks

- shield gens above 3A

Keep in mind that a lot of the celestial bodies which already have beacons on them are high G. Meaning that landing on them will require good thrusters and shields. I personally have died many times by not investing as much in the shields.
