The multipurpose ship is always better than the combat focused ship, unless we're comparing the big 3 where the Corvette wins.
I mean, Krait or Python vs Manba or FDL? Krait or Python 90% of the time. Vulture or DBX? DBX, unless you're really, really bad. Fed Gunship against any of these? Just lol.
And I think it boils down to power. Every "combat focused ship" has an inadequate power plant, with the Vulture and Eagle being especially bad. Mulipurpose ships have to be able to power refineries, scanners, and other power-hungry modules AND GUNS at the same time. What this means in practice is that multipurpose ships can run shields that are easilt twice as effective as combat ships, while having only marginally less hull/armor, and still being more manuverable as most of the "multipurpose" ships are also slightly slanted towards exploration than other purposes.
It's power. Multipurpose ships have it, combat ships don't. The superiority of multipurpose is inevitable.
