Locations indicate surface sites that will show up in the nav panel after you complete a surface scan.  Geological sites will be fumaroles and geysers etc, which are now an excellent source of materials.  Biological will be magical space plants that you can scan for the codex and get a few materials from.  Thargoid will be thargoid stuff.

Human and guardian will also indicate orbital locations and seem to be a little bugged with reseach stations etc often showing up as guardian signals in the FSS locations panel.
