So I've made sure to read through this section multiple times, done a few searches but I am having trouble finding any clear information on deciphering the Number and Combinations of the little White Chevrons related to Frequency Tuning. I understand that when actively moving the view finder they can help zero in on the location of the signal, yet I can find little information on reading them.

What I am trying to understand is what the combinations of the White Chevrons tell us about the signal source itself. Does any one know of a well constructed legend or key for understanding them?

The only detail in relation to this that comes up over and over is that if the top row of Chevrons is spread out it means there are rings around the planetary body. But beyond that I can't seem to find any info on what the different combinations of Chevrons means, or how to read them any further. I am greatful for any help.
