The culture, laws and structure of the Federation were influenced by the USA, but they're quite different. The Federal constitution (Federal Accord) is based on all the countries who joined it. The political system in particular was influenced by the USA. The Federation has a much more corporate culture and it is countless times bigger.
In 3304 most people in the Federation don't remember that Earth had countries and find it strange that so many countries existed on one planet.
