I'll grant you that it can/will be a grind to get the ranks for a Corvette or Cutter. However, if by "modify" you mean engineer, I disagree that it will take months of grind. Sorry if you already know all of this.
For manufactured materials, go to Dav's hope and farm there.
For raw materials, go to the crashed Anaconda on Orrere 2 B and farm there.
For data materials, get a medium ship (I used my Python) and run passenger missions from Robigo (start at Robigo Mines) to Sirius Atmospherics (which is actually at Sothis). At first, take the Rep+++ payouts and get allied with all factions there, which will give you better missions. After that, you can choose missions with data materials payouts or just plain cash. I got a LOT of money and data running these missions. Just beware that your passengers are almost always wanted, so don't go anywhere near a station. I ran these missions for a few hours and got loads of cash and data materials.
Materials traders are found everywhere and these three sites normally give you higher-grade materials which you can trade for lower-grade materials. For Professor Palin, stack a couple of long-range passenger missions to the same spot about 6,000 LY away. Take along an Avanced Discovery Scanner and honk all the systems you go through. It adds up to a nice chunk of exploration data to sell when you get back. You get the nice payout from the passenger missions and satisfy the 5,000 LY requirement for him.
Overall, you should be able to unlock enough engineers and have the materials to significantly engineer an Anaconda in far less than monnths of grinding...depending on how many hours you play.
