To be fair, you could just as easily stick turreted weapons on the Crusader and run without any NPC Crew.  Personally I prefer this, not because of the cost, but just because the turrets will fire non-stop whereas my NPC Crew usually sit back and take a few random potshots and expect the SLF to do all the work.

As to OP's point, YMMV but for me, SLFs are my favorite ship in the game.  For Assassinations they're not great due to the deployment time (that's what I have a Vulture for) but for just sitting in a HighRES and racking up 3mil credits an hour, you can't beat a SLF.  Plus when you overestimate yourself you're out a 2,000cr reload instead of a multi-million credit rebuy.
