Names and the entire economy was generated by a pseudo random generator.. the original elite didn't have a 'database' of planets and systems, instead they were procedurally generated

Source code is around and various ports to every language you can think of 

And the principle still live on - in fact i'm using simillar techniques for simulating trading activity in my day job at an investment bank ... we have a 'virtual' counterpaty called Lave Industries in our test data generation
