You want combat or do you want multirole?  The Python with mild engineering makes it extremely sustainable in combat, more so than the FDL which can only rely on weaker SCBs and requires more engineering to have extremely heavy shielding.

The Python can simply do more, do missions, and go farther than the FDL.  I don't know what DPS differences you're seeing in the FDL vs the Python but DPS means jack shit if you can't get good angles of attack and time on target.
