A Power is a leader of a faction who strives to control inhabited space in Powerplay. Each power attempts to expand influence and control in star systems. Extract resources to finance expansion and protect exploited systems.

Powers are distinct entities compared to Minor factions and Superpowers. Each Power controls a vast amount of systems. Each system is aligned to Superpower and Minor factions.

Many powers are aligned directly with Superpowers, but some are independent entities. A Power that is aligned with a Superpower can also scheme against fellow allies of the same faction. Individual Powers have different Ethos which are effective against particular government types. Ultimately every Power operates with their own agenda.

There are 12 leading human powers in the galaxy. Zachary Hudson retired from Powerplay on 31 October 3310.^[1] The same day, Federal Shadow President Jerome Archer and Alliance Councillor Nakato Kaine joined the ranks of active powers.

• The leader of the power that controls or exploits the system, has his or her portrait blinking among advertisements in the system's ports. The same applies to all the contesting powers.
