Here's where fdevs got themselves a little muddled up - they started with "thermic" as a weapon type better for taking down shields, and interchangeably mixed it with "thermal". Unfortunately they also introduced thermal attacks (which produce heat in the target) and have now conflated it further with thermal resistances.
So thermal resistance protects against thermic attacks and not thermal attacks. Derp.
