There's almost nothing that can effectively interdict a well-fitted out Explorer; four pips to Engines and a good set of thrusters and it can just boost away from anything big enough to mass-lock it. For that reason alone, plus its decent cargo cap and jump range, it makes an excellent small trader (or basically any other non-combat role, e.g. miner) before you can afford a Python or something else with a bit more combat effectiveness.
If you're not planning to fight that much, I'd recommend this as a good ship to save up for when you first start playing.
