A beam laser is an energy weapon that causes immediate damage to any ship it intersects at effective range. Beam lasers "stay on" until the person firing it deactivates it. This means that a large amount of damage is inflicted on any ship that stays within its path. Also, it can be "swept" across an enemy doing damage to multiple parts of the shield or hull or it can be directed across multiple enemies.
Beam lasers are prone to overheating and cutting out because they continuously fire large amounts of energy. At the expense of more cargo space, a booster can be equipped that can help speed up cooling.
