The Internal Compartment slots can fit a multitude of different equipment types. Those are :

Shields protect the ship from damage.

Shield Cell Banks are used to load the shields via precharged batteries.

Cargo Racks are used to hold cargo in your ship.

Discovery Scanners are used to discover and examinate stellar bodies.

Hatch Breaker Limpet Controllers are used to program blank Limpets
