Merits

Merits are essentially "reward points" that are earned through various in-game actions and affect a power's standing in the system they were earned in. As a CMDR earns merits, they will gain ranks---called "ratings"---once they complete an initial 5 missions for their power, with each rating granting the CMDR a combination of new/incrementally enhanced bonuses [citation needed]. In sharp contrast to PowerPlay v1, merits in PowerPlay v2 are earned (1) immediately and (2) do not have a "half-life". The only way to lose your merits is to defect to another power, in which case you lose all your merits. [1]. It is not known whether or not merits can be lost by performing hostile actions against either your own power or friendly powers.[citation needed].
