As the name suggests this craft has a high jump range relative to other ships in the game. It has six weapon hardpoints and has a good turning circle for its size. Therefore the Asp is able to act not just as an explorer, but also as a heavy duty bounty hunting vessel if the Viper is not to the player's taste, as well as an ideal pirate ship. Its ample cargo capacity and heavy armament make it ideal for this purpose. Its jump range also allows pirates to reach systems of a different faction to pay off any particularly frustrating bounties.
The Asp Explorer has a high jump range relative to other ships in the game and thus is quite good for use as an exploration ship. It has six weapon hardpoints and has a good turning radius for its size which makes the Asp good for more than just exploration. The Asp can act as a heavy-duty bounty hunting vessel due to its superb weapon capacity and good maneuverability for its size.  Pirates can also use the Asp to great effect because of the ample cargo capacity, heavy armament, long jump range and large mass (allowing it to charge its own FSD with minimal mass disruption while also mass disrupting the FSD of low mass prey).

The main downside of the Asp is the lofty price tag, with approximately a 5 million credit difference between the Asp and the Lakon Type 6, and 5.7 million credits more expensive than the Cobra - the last multipurpose vehicle before progressing to the Asp. This large price gap is worth considering when deciding on what spaceship to aim for. In addition, the repair costs of an Asp are much higher than those of smaller ships.
The main downside of this ship is the high initial purchase cost and high maintenance costs.  Many roles that the Asp fills can be fulfilled with cheaper ships.  An example would be pirating which can be done in a Cobra whose purchase cost is approximately 5.7 million less credits while still having a moderate cargo capacity and threatening weapon armament. Another example would be trading which can be done in a Lakon Type 6 that has nearly the same cargo capacity, and costs approximately 5 million less credits.

As a trading vessel, it is not a big upgrade from the Lakon Type 6, considering the 5 million credits price difference. The Asp can carry somewhat more cargo, and jump farther, but is more expensive to operate. It can, however, defend itself much better against pirates.

The Asp Explorer is the civilian version of the military model Asp Mk II's (which first saw service in 2878). Lakon Spaceways now owns the licence to construct these ships and has marketed them heavily at customers looking for their first multi-crewed ships. The ship class has earned a solid reputation for long range missions and those requiring some discretion.

— In-Game Description
