Smugglers are similar to traders except that they sell goods where it is illegal, on the [[Black Market|black market]]. Smugglers have to use stealth, cunning and special equipment to outwit the Police and sometimes military authorities, especially around stations, to sell their goods at a profit while escaping fines and a criminal record. Smugglers can also be a special case of couriers, where the player is asked to transport forbidden items.

Smuggling is just like trading. Only illegal.
To make their way into a station the smuggler must be stealthy and quick. Generally one must reduce their signature by turning off unnecessary modules and turning on silent running to glide past the authority vessels and into the docking bay without being scanned.{{cite}}

In previous games different star systems, depending on their politics, had different attitudes to certain commodities such as slaves, weapons and narcotics. Some governments were so conservative that even everyday items such as alcohol and animal meat were taboo and therefore illegal. This created the opportunity to profit from the black market.
