If you die, get killed, are hunted down, self destruct, or just slammed into a space station by a malfunctioning docking computer, then you will be given an opportunity to rebuy your ship by paying an 'insurance' cost derived from the ship's purchase cost.
Upon the destruction of your ship, an insurance screen will be displayed offering you the option to repurchase your (now destroyed) ship's loadout, or to choose a free Sidewinder (loaned to you from the Pilots Federation). The cost of the rebuy is affected by your or your killer's notoriety; the higher your notoriety, the more it will cost, but the higher your killer's notoriety, the less it will cost. If you do not have enough credits to repurchase your old loadout, you will be given an opportunity to take out a loan that scales to your highest Pilots Federation rank. If you cannot repurchase your old loadout even with loans, you will be forced to choose the Sidewinder, and lose your old ship and its loadout.
Note that this isn't insurance in the traditional sense. If you cannot or chose not to repurchase your old ship, you will not be paid any credits in compensation; you will lose the value of the ship and all its fittings.
Lore
When a commander's ship receives catastrophic hull damage (breaks apart) or becomes incapable of supporting life, the commander automatically escapes via an ever-present, indestructible escape pod. The escape pod transports the commander back to the last station that they docked at.[1] Galactic Insurance provides your pilots insurance to help you rebuy your old ship loadout at reduced cost, or you can take a basic Sidewinder for free.[2]
The Cockpit Voice-Activated System is issued as standard by the Pilots Federation in accordance with statute B7249 of the Interstellar Transit Charter. For insurance purposes it is illegal to travel in most systems without the use of COVAS technology.[3]
