Frontier have also indicated that they are developing a family of ships for the navies of each faction in the game. While not all these ships will be present in the game at release, and only the smallest are likely to be playable, the categories of military ship are:
Cruisers : Large capital ships which have a significant impact on entire star systems, and carry squadrons of fighters. The only confirmed ship of this type is the Imperial "Majestic" class Interditor.
Frigates: Escort vessels designed to protect against fighters.
Destroyers: Anti-ship warships, now largely obsolescent
Carriers: Dedicated to carrying squadrons of fighter craft.
Transporters: Armoured transports and couriers.
Corvettes or Cutters: Light reconaisance and escort warships. Frontier have hinted that ships in this category will be playable, though advanced.
Fighters: Light and short-ranged warships. Unlike the playable, commercially available fighter types, military fighters are non-hyperspace-capable.
