Vehicles are used to traverse the surface of terrestrial planets and moons. Planetary gravity affects the handling of vehicles, requiring pilots to take care when driving to avoid damaging collisions or unintentionally launching into extreme jumps. Currently, the Scarab Surface Recon Vehicle is the only ground vehicle available to purchase. All ships can carry a Scarab by installing a Planetary Vehicle Hangar.

Surface Recon Vehicles

A Surface Recon Vehicle (SRV) must be purchased separately from the Planetary Vehicle Hangar module. If the pilot dies in their SRV, they will return to their ship, whether it is still parked on the surface or has automatically returned to orbit. Any SRV damage is automatically repaired upon returning to the ship. SRV fuel and ammunition can be synthesized as needed, provided the pilot has the necessary materials.

There are plans for additional classes of Surface Recon Vehicles. They will have different Internal Compartments for the Planetary Vehicle Hangar module which provides the on-board hangar space to carry and repair an SRV.

In 2016 during an AMA, David Braben was asked "is there an ETA for planetary mining? and will we get a special SRV for that purpose" Braben said "No ETA yet, but it is planned."[1]
