Each ship can equip a variety of energy, projectile, and missile-based weapons. Most weapons are available in either fixed, gimballed, or turreted variants. Weapons are organized into classes ranging from 1 to 4 indicating their relative size (the higher the number the bigger the hardpoint must be to equip the weapon). Only the Cannon, Multi-Cannon, Pulse, Beam Laser, and Plasma Accelerator have class 4 variants whereas most other weapons have class 3 as their largest variant. In the outfitting store, fixed weapons are indicated with a crosshair icon, gimballed weapons with a gyroscope icon, and turreted weapons with a small turret icon.

Each ship in Elite: Dangerous can equip a variety of energy and projectile based weapons. In addition some weapons are available in either gimballed, turreted, or fixed variants. Weapons are organized into classes ranging from 1-8 (C1, C2, C3, C4, etc.) indicating their relative power usage, damage output, and accuracy. Gimballed weapons are suffixed with a (G) in the outfitting store. Turreted weapons are suffixed with a (T) in the outfitting store. Fixed weapons have no suffix.
Weapons
Weapon damage is divided into four categories: Thermal, Kinetic, Thermal-Kinetic, and Explosive.

Thermal weapons (lasers) have the benefit of unlimited ammunition, but they also tend to overheat your ship and drain your weapons capacitor more rapidly than Kinetic weapons do. Thermal weapons deal increased damage to shields and normal damage to a ship's hull.

Kinetic weapons require ammunition to fire and therefore require reloads when your current magazine runs empty; however, they build heat slower and drains less of the weapons capacitor than Energy weapons. Kinetic weapons deal reduced damage to shields but increased damage to ship hulls.

Thermal Kinetic weapons require ammunition to fire, produce a lot of heat, and require a larger amount of energy to fire. However, Thermal Kinetic weapons are equally effective against shields and hull and tend to have high damage and high penetration. The Railgun and Plasma Accelerator deal Thermal kinetic damage.

Very little information about the specifics of weapons was discussed during the Kickstarter campaign. However, in a Dev Diary video, David Braben confirmed that both beam and pulse lasers would return, as well as missiles. Projectile and plasma based weapons have also been made available.
Explosive weapons, such as missiles, torpedoes, and mines, are extremely ineffective against shields, but can inflict strong damage to a ship's hull. Explosive weapons have small and limited ammunition supplies, and can be shot down by Point-Defense Turrets. They are capable of being fired without adequate weapons energy reserves at the cost of extreme system heat, which can easily overheat your ship and do module and/or hull damage to your own ship. The explosive blast from Explosive type weapons is capable of damaging multiple ships if they are near the detonation point, which can easily cause "friendly-fire" problems if not used carefully.
Weapons
Weapons in Elite: Dangerous come in a wide range of types and classes. Those currently featured in Standard Beta are as follows:
*Pulse Laser
*Beam Laser
*Burst Laser
*Stealth Laser
*Railgun
*Plasma Accelerator
*Multi-cannon
*Missile Rack
*Point Defence Turret
Lasers use a recharging capacitor. They don't need ammo, but they do tend to drain quickly and take time to recharge. All other weapons currently use ammunition, which can be bought at any station. Weapons also generate heat; if you have more than 100% heat, you won't be able to fire (given that you'd be overheating, you probably have other problems on your hands, however).

Regardless of type, all weapons are placed in different mounts, which determine how they aim at targets:
Most weapons, with the exception of several explosive weapons, will be unable to fire if there is insufficient energy in the Weapons Energy Capacitor. Increasing the number of pips to the Weapons Energy Capacitor will increase the recharge rate on the Weapons Energy Capacitor, allowing weapons to be fired more frequently. When there is insufficient energy to fire a weapon, a "Thermal Overload" Message will be displayed next to the Weapon's name on the HUD.

Thermal weapons
Fixed
These weapons use a charging capacitor and thus do not need ammo, but tend to drain weapon energy quickly and take time to recharge.
Fixed weapons are rather powerful, but have very little tracking ability - they shoot straight ahead, and can only do minor tracking when the target is within the weapon's crosshairs. Because of this, fixed weapons depend heavily on your maneuverability; however, they are cheap, use little power, and every weapon is available in a fixed mount.

The following weapons have fixed mounts:
Thermal weapons are effective at stripping shields.
*Pulse Laser
* Beam Laser
* Beam Laser
** Retributor (Powerplay module)
* Burst Laser
* Burst Laser
* Stealth Laser
** Cytoscrambler (Powerplay module)
* Pulse Laser
** Pulse Disruptor (Powerplay module)

Kinetic Weapons
Kinetic-based weapons require ammunition to fire but generate less heat and consume less power as a result. Ammunition can be replenished at most stations or outposts. Kinetic weapons are good against hull, but are not as effective against shields.
* Cannon
** Concord cannon (Powerplay module)
* Multi-cannon
** Enforcer Cannon (Powerplay module)
* Fragment Cannon
** Pacifier Frag-Cannon (Powerplay module)
* Shock Cannon (Experimental)
* Remote Release Flechette Launcher (Experimental)
* Remote Release Flak Launcher (Experimental)

Thermal Kinetic Weapons
Thermal-Kinetic Weapons require ammunition to fire, generate a large amount of heat, and consume a large amount of energy. However, they deal very high damage and are equally effective against Shields and Hull.
* Railgun
* Railgun
* Plasma Accelerator
** Imperial Hammer (Powerplay module)
* Multi-cannon
* Plasma Accelerator
* Missile Rack
** Advanced Plasma Accelerator (Powerplay module)

Explosive Weapons
Explosive Weapons require ammunition to fire. Most explosive weapons can be fired with insufficient energy in the weapons capacitor, but do so at the cost of extreme heat generation that is quite capable of reaching critical heat levels that may cause heat damage to your own modules and/or hull. Explosive Weapons are extremely ineffective against shields, but do greatly increased damage to hull.
* Missile Rack
* Seeker Missile Rack
** Pack-Hound Missile Rack (Powerplay module)
* Torpedo Pylon
* Mine Launcher
* Shock Mine Launcher
* Enzyme Missile Rack (Experimental)

Mining Tools
Mining Tools are a subset of weapons designed primarily for mining asteroids, and are consequently ineffective in ship-to-ship combat. Like weapons, however, they must be installed in a ship's hardpoints.
* Abrasion Blaster
* Mining Laser
** Mining Lance (Powerplay module)
* Mining Volley Repeater
* Sub-surface Displacement Missile
* Seismic Charge Launcher

Weapon Mounts
Regardless of type, all weapons are placed in different mounts which determine how they aim at targets:

Fixed
Fixed weapons are the most powerful of the three types, but have very little tracking ability - they shoot straight ahead, and can only do minor tracking of a few degrees (enough to converge on a target at most ranges) when the target is within the weapon's crosshairs. Because of this, fixed weapons depend heavily on your ship's manoeuvrability and your own aiming skills, but compared to other weapon mount types, they are cheaper, use less power, generate less heat, are not affected by chaff, and every weapon is available in a fixed mount.

Certain heavy weapons are only available in fixed mounts.

Every weapon in the game is available in a fixed mount, including standard, Powerplay faction locked, experimental, and mining tool weapons.

Gimbal
Gimbal
Gimballed means that the weapon is hung in a gimbal-construction, so it can move independent of the ship's orientation. Gimbal-mounted weapons can keep track of a target even when you're not pointed directly at the target, allowing far more firepower to hit a target. In exchange, gimbal weapons are usually weaker than their fixed counterparts, being one level lower than a comparable fixed weapon. Also keep in mind that tracking systems track heat; if a target is not generating sufficient heat, gimbals will not lock on and behave much like fixed weapons.

Gimballed weapons are mounted within a semi-flexible assembly which allows for limited pitch, and yaw of the weapon within certain arcs limited by both the position of the mount and the actual assembly itself. Though they are not as flexible as Turrets, gimbal-mounted weapons can keep track of targets within a decently-sized cone directly in front of the mounting, making them easier to use than Fixed mounts. In exchange, gimballed weapons are usually weaker than their fixed counterparts and are vulnerable to chaff as it disrupts the weapon's ability to track the target.

When fired without a locked target, a Gimballed weapon will act as a Fixed mount instead, firing directly ahead. This can be used to partially bypass the scrambling effect of chaff; unlock the target and track/lead manually until the chaff effect ends.

Turret
Turret
Turrets are similar to gimbal mounts, but can currently only be placed on Anacondas. They have the tracking of a gimbal and the power of a fixed weapon, but only come in Class 4 versions.

Turrets are semi-independent auto-firing weapons that have a 360 degree range of fire. Standard turrets generally act autonomously, and do not require the hiring of an NPC crewman to act as a gunner. They must be part of the currently active weapon group in order to operate in either the Forward Fire or Targeted Enemy modes, otherwise they will not engage targets, even if they were previously activated.

Compared to Fixed and Gimballed weapons, Turrets are typically far more expensive (usually at least twice as expensive), turrets are in the middle of power consumption from all three weapon types, fixed being the least, and gimballed being the highest, however they have the lowest damage output. They can also be manually controlled by a human/player Gunner when using Multicrew functionality; the Gunner will take control of all Turreted weapons and select targets independent of the Helm, allowing ships to engage multiple separate hostiles.

Note: You can select one of three "Turret Weapon Modes" from the Functions tab of the Systems menu; it applies to all equipped turrets at once. The modes are;
# Forward Fire - Your turrets will act as fixed weapons and will be fired manually; pull the trigger to fire once, hold down the trigger for continuous firing. This mode removes all the advantages that turrets have, as they will operate as a much lower damage version of their fixed weapon counterpart, but prevents them from being affected by chaff.
# Target Only - The turrets will automatically track and shoot at your manually locked target, so long as it is within their firing arc(s). The turrets start firing autonomously if you pull the trigger once. Turret firing range varies with turret type; Lasers will engage distant targets, whereas Multi-cannons will only fire at closer ranges due to loss of accuracy - despite their greater maximum range compared to most Lasers.
# Fire at Will - The turrets will fire automatically on any hostile target which is firing at you, once you pull the trigger. In this mode 2 turrets can focus on different targets at the same time. Since you cannot fire first at a target, even if the target interdicted you but did not shoot yet, this is rather a defensive setting.
