There are a number of distinct roles that players can take on.  Roles do not require prior experience or skills to take part in - by obtaining the necessary equipment anyone can perform any role. Trading, smuggling, exploring, mining, bounty hunting, and pirating are the six main roles currently in Beta 3.  Frontier Developments have stated that they want all roles to be equally profitable.

Careers can be performed by anyone with the necessary equipment. As a commander licensed by the Pilots Federation, you are a freelancer who can pursue any activity without prior experience nor skill. Careers can involve ship and on foot activities. You can roam the galaxy without restrictions except star systems that require a permit. Change the Core Systems by supporting a faction in Powerplay. Develop uninhabited star systems via colonisation. Roleplay in unscripted events.

Bounty Hunter
The Pilots Federation recognizes the main careers: combat, trader, explorer, CQC, Mercenary and Exobiologist. You gain ranks by doing activities related to these careers.
{{main|Bounty Hunter
Space is a rough place and there are plenty of pirates in the anarchy systems who need to be retired. The bounty hunter takes advantage of the in-game bounty system, earning credits and combat rank for destroying pirate ships. Bounties can be set either by the game itself or by other playerscite. Bounty hunters specialize in lethal, offensively-focused ships which are capable of reliably destroying their prey.

Any player who attacks a ship in a controlled zone (e.g. Federation jurisdiction) or fails to pay a fine will get a bounty on their head. You will not get bounties in conflict zones, because it is war and you are expected to attack in those areas (after choosing a side). Any other player can collect such a bounty by killing the player. NPC's will also spawn with random bounties on their heads. Your ship scanner will tell you if your selected target is "Clean" or if there is a warrant for their destruction. An additional "Kill warrant Scanner" may increase bounty profit by revealing other infractions not revealed during a basic scan.
Colonisation
System Colonisation
System Architect
System Architect
The System Architect can colonize unpopulated star systems and develop them by building facilities such as a starport, planet port and settlement. The facilities determine the economy type like high tech or agribusiness. Create new civilizations and expand a faction's influence in the galaxy.

Bulletin Boards also offer missions to kill specific NPC's (possibly also notorious players?). Named NPC's can be found by looking into "Unidentified signals" until you find them. Missions to kill NPC's can net as much as 173,000 Cr. You can also get missions to go kill "6 people in ... star system", where you can just go to a navigation beacon and shoot things down.

Courier
Combat
Bulletin Boards at space stations will often offer missions that doesn't require any cargo space; you are just asked to deliver a message or a small item to a different station. For example, communist systems can have missions to deliver a stack of comics to a federation system "to open up their minds for the truth". Federation systems in turn will offer similar missions to spread propaganda to independent systems. You can also be asked to transport historical artifacts etc. More money is paid to far destinations, and the risk involved.

Assassin
Assassin
An assassin requires flight experience and solid equipment as their targets are highly dangerous. The payout for taking down targets can be very rewarding, but never underestimate the enemy - their bounties are large for a reason.

Explorer
Clr
Although exploration was a component of previous games, there was no way to progress in any meaningful way by exploration alone. In Elite:Dangerous, players will have the opportunity to earn income and gain reputation by making pioneering jumps into unexplored systems, and gathering data on planets, stars and other points of interest within systems.

Your reward will differ depending on how much information you contribute. For example, one station may know about all the planets in a star system, but not have specific information on the planet surface. If you equip your ship with a surface scanner, you can then sell this complimentary information for a small price. If you are able to explore a star system where no data has been reported before, and you collect all data on planet names and also surface information etc, then you will get a much bigger reward.
Bounty Hunter
Bounty Hunter
Space is a rough place and there are plenty of pirates in the anarchy systems who need to be retired. The bounty hunter takes advantage of the in-game bounty system, earning credits and combat rank for destroying wanted ships. Bounty hunters specialise in lethal, offensively-focused ships which are capable of reliably destroying their prey.

Speculation It seems currently that many players can report the same star system information. In this case, the first player to report it will get a big sum, and subsequent reports will be paid a smaller sum (for corroborating the data), until it's down to zero value and you will not be able to sell the information. End speculation

CQC Pilot
CQC
CQC (Close Quarter Combat) is an arena combat simulation by Utopixx Entertainment. This is separate from the main galaxy. Pilots can compete in 3 game modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag. Flyable ships are the Eagle, Sidewinder, F63 Condor and the Imperial Fighter which can be customized with loadouts. CQC ranks are officially recognized by the Pilots Federation.

Mercenary
Mercenary
Ship-based mercenary work can be found at a starport's mission board, and send the player to fight at Conflict Zones and warzones. In zones with active fighting a mercenary can find near constant work.
On Foot mercenary missions involve settlements at Concourses across the galaxy. Missions involving raids, infiltration and simple repair work are available via the Concourse Terminals. Commanders looking to make more credits can accept shadier missions from recruiters. Mercenaries may enlist with Frontline Solutions to participate in local Conflict Zones and to help a faction expand its control.

Operations allow you to do challenging scenarios by yourself or with a squad. These are on-foot in a Megaship and with ships in space.

Pirate
Pirate
Pirate
Pirates will naturally earn combat ranking by attacking and destroying other ships. Their primary motivation will be the precious cargo carried by their prey, although new game mechanics (such as the ability to affect politics and supply and demand of commodities) will add an extra dimension to those who are willing to have a price on their head. Pirates use powerful weaponry and fearsome reputations to encourage traders to hand over their goods.
The primary motivation of pirates is to plunder the cargo of their prey. Pirates use powerful weaponry and their fearsome reputations to encourage traders to hand over their goods. They can employ hatch-breaker limpets which, when fired at an un-shielded target, will latch onto the cargo hatch and extract cargo canisters. Pirate also loot settlements for valuable items. Pirates are criminals so they live in anarchy systems.

Xeno Hunter
Xeno Hunter

A Xeno Hunter is specialized in combat vs Thargoids. All Thargoids have nearly maximum damage resistance, and require AX weapons or Guardian weapons. Thargoid Scouts are the weakest with only 77% human weapons resistance. Meanwhile, Thargoid Titans are capital ship that are best dealt with in teams. Thargoid can deal caustic damages, so the Decontamination Limpet Controller or Caustic Sink Launcher is advised. Overheating your ship can clear caustic damage, though it requires to overheat your ship to a super high temperature between 180%-220%.

Covert
When playing as a pirate, you should target the cargo hatch of the ship you are attacking. If you manage to hit it, it will open and spill the cargo. There are also special cargo hatch disruptors you can equip on your ship, which shoots a robot at the target to break open the cargo hatch and eject the cargo. For desperate pirates, you can bring the ship down to 5-6 % health, where the NPC/Player will often dump cargo to buy time for a jump to hyperspace. During those times, cheap cargo will usually be jettisoned first (if you are attacked by a pirate, you can choose to jettison specific cargo in the right menu), so it will pay off to hold off on destructing the ship even if the first things to tumble out are crap items.
Infiltrator
Infiltrator
Infiltrator jobs can be found at various mission boards and require the player to attack or covertly retrieve or steal data packages from a target settlement. Infiltrators are often tasked with attacking a certain quantity of a specific settlement's skimmers, destroying settlement's power grid or obtaining a data package by scanning a settlement's data points via the data link scanner.

Smuggle
Clr
Smugglers are like traders. However while they buy a given good where it is legal they sell it where it is illegal, on the black market. Smugglers have to use stealth, cunning and special equipment to outwit the Police and sometimes military authorities, especially around stations, to sell their goods at a profit while escaping fines and a criminal record. Smuggler can also be a special case of couriers, where you transport items which are forbidden.

Trader
Exploration
In its simplest form, trading is simply buying goods on the Commodities Market in one location and selling them at another, the difference in price is the profit. Trading links to a dynamic background economy simulation based on player activity, which will result in changes in prices and volumes of goods in different systems over time, and even the colonization of new systems.

Traders are well-advised to keep some cash in reserve! If by any chance you lose your ship - whether down to piracy or simply a docking accident - your cargo is not insured. For this reason prudent traders never spend more than 50% or 60% of their credits on any one cargo. No matter how tempting it can be to stuff your hold with every last bit of gold or Progenitor Cells you can get your hands on, it is not worth the risk of losing all of your working capital at once.
Exobiologist
Exobiologist
The Exobiologist discovers and catalogues alien lifeforms. Exobiology is performed on foot with a Genetic Sampler to collect samples from alien flora and fauna. The collected samples can be sold to Vista Genomics. If commanders identify an unknown species then Vista Genomics will credit them with the discovery.

Traders in less-safe systems will rely on armor, shields and weapons to dissuade pirates from attacking them, or to buy enough time to make an escape. If you have a lot of space, you can carry a small amount of cheap items to jettison if you are attacked. Jettisoning inexpensive cargo can buy you time for a jump to hyperspace.
Clr

Bulletin Boards will often offer a special reward for some specific items. So when you arrive with cargo, you should check the bulletin board first to see if you can make a higher profit that way.
Explorer
Explorer
Exploring involves finding and scanning planetary bodies. Explorers can earn credits and increase their rank by making pioneering jumps to unexplored star systems, gathering data on planets, stars and other points of interest within systems. Exploration data can be sold at the Universal Cartographics of Starport Services. The first player who sells data about a celestial body will be credited in-game with a "Discovered By" tag on the Galaxy Map. These bodies can still be mapped, albeit for a lower reward. Alternatively, explorers can go sightseeing of beautiful star systems in the Milky Way.
Clr

The galaxy map offers tools to track existing trade routes where high supply from one system is sent by NPC's to a high demand in another system. But it is also possible to discover your own trade routes outside of this. By heavy trading, you can "bleed a system dry" so that they go from high supply to low or no supply, or contrariwise lower demand from high to low. Thus, you can never be entirely sure that a trade route will stay as a stable income.
Mining
External trading tools (such https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=53037 or http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk/) are useful if you are a trader.
Miner
Miner
Mining involves using various specialised tools to locate resource-rich asteroids, extracting and refining various raw minerals and metals from those asteroids, and then selling the collected commodities for the highest possible profit. Although more time-consuming and manual than simple trading, the number of tools available to miners allow for a more custom approach to the task, and massive profits can be earned depending on what mineral is collected and where it is sold.

Salvager
Mining

Salvager
A salvager recovers valuable items such as commodities, data and materials. These are found in space, at salvageable wrecks or on celestial bodies (planets, moons). Whether retrieving an item is legal or not can be seen by the GUI text that appears when targeting it - either "Legal Salvage" or "Illegal Salvage".
Clr

In Beta 3 Mining was added as one of the main features of the update. Unlike other games Mining in Elite: Dangerous is very manual and consists of chipping off pieces of asteroids for then to scoop them up and refine them. This is time consuming, but with the right technique it can be just as profitable as other roles or professions.
Multiplayer
Mining is a good way to learn to control a ship, scoop cargo, and activate control panel options.
Multicrew
Multicrew
Players can serve as crew members on each others' ships, instantly transferring to a secondary bridge position via drop-in, drop-out matchmaking, accessible via an option on the Comms panel, or boarding a teammate's ship on foot. Some ship types can have up to 3 people in Multicrew, controlling either the Helm (Piloting), Gunner (turreted weapons), or Fighter con (two ship launched fighters).

Powerplay
Powerplay
Serving a Power can augment most careers. Pledge allegiance to a Power to be their acting force in the galaxy. Spread their influence, and expand their territory. Compete with other commanders for control of star systems to change the governments, market economy and local laws. Gain monetary and other rewards for supporting the Power.
Clr

Squadrons
Squadrons
A squadron is a player-run organization. Members can setup a hierarchy with ranks. Squadron leaders can set objectives and custom activities like Anti-Xeno Activists, Bounty Hunters, Explorers, Faction Supporters, Humanitarian Aid Providers, Pirates, Power Supporters, Traders and Miners. The playstyles can be PvP, PvE or roleplay. Each squadron can support a Minor Faction or a Power. The Javelin-Class Carrier has a bank for credits, commodities, personal items, goods, assets and ships.

Trading
Smuggler
Smuggler
Smugglers are similar to traders except that they sell illegal goods on the black market. Smugglers must use stealth, cunning and special equipment to outwit the security forces and sometimes military authorities to sell their goods at a profit while escaping fines and a criminal record. Smugglers can also be a special class of couriers, where the player is asked to transport forbidden items.
Clr

Trader
Trader
Trading is the act of buying commodities at a low price and selling at a higher price. The Galaxy Map can help traders determine profitable trade routes by providing purchasable market data, displaying NPC trade routes and economy types. More profits are made during community goals and gold rushes. Hauling cargo around the galaxy attracts pirates.

Transportation
Courier
Courier
A Starport Mission Board usually offers missions that require little or no cargo space and can be an easy (albeit low) source of income. Missions that require no cargo space will be marked with one horizontal arrow pointing right whereas courier missions that require some cargo space are marked with a cargo container and an arrow pointing to the right. Missions that have two horizontal arrows going left and right require you to buy the stated cargo and return to the port with it. Accepted missions can be turned in (completed) by travelling to the mission's destination and using the starport mission board there.

Passenger Liner Pilot
Passenger Liner
Passenger Liner Pilot involves transporting paying passengers to destinations. Passenger contracts operate in a similar manner to mission board contracts. Ships equipped with Passenger Cabins may pick up passengers in the Passenger Lounge at many stations and surface ports. There are two types of passenger contracts: VIP and Bulk.
Clr

Search and Rescue
Search and Rescue
Search and Rescue (SAR) provide assistance in emergency situations. Certain Legal Salvage items, such as escape pods (occupied or damaged), "black box" flight recorders, and personal effects, can be turned in to a station's Search and Rescue Agent contact for a reward. Damaged stations offer passenger missions to evacuate refugees to the nearest Rescue Vessel, and Rescue Vessels offer missions to salvage items from inside damaged stations. You can also rescue stranded pilots in space or repair the hulls of combat ships in battle.
