The Sidewinder is a small ship produced by Faulcon DeLacy. The Sidewinder was originally released in 2982 as a light support ship and lacked any jump capability until the advent of the Frame Shift Drive, which was compact enough to allow jump-capable versions to be produced. As a small, inexpensive vessel designed to tackle a variety of roles, including light transport and combat, the Sidewinder is often the first ship that a newly-registered Pilots Federation pilot will fly and own. Its dependability, versatility, and agility combine to make it a useful all-rounder and an excellent choice for green and experienced pilots alike. Some independent navies still use the Sidewinder as fighters and patrol craft, and it is also one of the four vessels permitted in the CQC Championship.

The Sidewinder MkI, built by Faulcon DeLacy, is a superb multipurpose ship suitable for any role. It is inexpensive - free, in fact - and can be used for light transport and combat duties.

Its manoeuvrability makes it an excellent choice for both green and experienced pilots. The Sidewinder is a dependable vessel that will get you where you need to go, safe and sound.

Uses the Spin Ionic MV.

Overview
The Sidewinder is thea defaultlow-cost starter craft offeredgiven throughoutto thenewly-licensed gamepilots. TheIn playerthe startsevent inthat one,a andpilot ifloses attheir any time theircurrent ship is destroyed, they can get a free Sidewinder if they can't or don't wantelect to replaceaccept theira previousSidewinder ship.on Newloan playersfrom whothe stillPilots struggleFederation withif learningthey theare game, unable mayto find themselves flying inafford a Sidewinderreplacement for athe longerdestroyed timeship or goingdo backnot towant ita oftenreplacement.

Although the Sidewinder is cheap, it is not harmless;, itand is amongone of the topmost when itagile comes to manoeuvrability compared to other ships available. In particular, it can out-turn most other ships, being topped in that category only by the Eagle Mk II, Vulture, and CourierMk V, and has solid lateral thrust. It is, however, one of the slowest-moving and weakest-hulled ships available. Only the Anaconda and certain dedicated trading ships have slower maximum speeds, and only the Eagle Mk II has a weaker hull.

The Sidewinder is therefore an acceptable ship in combat, but lacks firepower. When flying one, using its excellent turning to lock opponents into circling matches, and burning away opposite of the enemy to escape are advised tactics. When fighting a Sidewinder, keep it at range and lay down heavy fire if the current ship cannot outmanoeuvre it, and it should be destroyed quickly; with a ship that can keep up with its turning, close in and blast away, making sure to stay away from its front. While it has terrible damage output, it still beats out Hauler for damage and is better than Type-6 Transporter and Dolphin in combat, due to superior mobility and cheaper price.
It is, however, one of the slowest-moving and weakest-hulled ships in the game; only the Anaconda and certain pure trade ships have slower maximum speeds, and only the Eagle has a weaker hull (but makes up for it with stronger shields.)

As a trader, the Sidewinder has the worst performance of all ships. With a maximum cargo capacity of only 16t, finding trading missions that involve transporting such a small quantity is difficult. It is recommended to instead take up data delivery missions until more spacious options like the Hauler or Adder become affordable. The same drawback applies when attempting to use the Sidewinder as a miner.
The Sidewinder is therefore an acceptable ship in a (figurative) knife-fight, but lacks firepower. When flying one, using its excellent turning to lock opponents into circling matches, and burning away opposite of the enemy to escape are advised tactics. When fighting a Sidewinder, keep it at range and lay down heavy fire if the current ship can't outmanoeuvre it, and it should be destroyed quickly; with a ship that can keep up with its turning, close in and blast away, making sure to stay away from its front.

With a maximum possible jump range of about 24ly before engineering, the Sidewinder is not a terrible option for exploration and can be a good introduction to the role. However, the Hauler is a superior choice for that purpose due to its much greater jump range, and even early on it costs very little to obtain and outfit as a dedicated exploration vessel.
The weapon hardpoints are located as follows: 2 small hardpoints in front of cockpit on upper surface of ship.

Overall, the Sidewinder fulfills its purpose as a starter ship perfectly. It is capable in most roles, but is one of the worst choices in each individual role, even when specialised for them. The Sidewinder lets pilots come to grips with what exactly they want to do to earn credits before upgrading to something better, though experienced and wealthy pilots may enjoy keeping one on hand for joyriding.
The Sidewinder MkI has an available 16 piece cosmetic ship kit that can be purchased from the Frontier store which allows you to "remodel your ship in your personal style". The ship kit does not affect gameplay.

It is our solemn duty to deliver to you a package left with us, from a benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous at this time. The package was placed in our care with instructions to be delivered in the event – and only in the event – of your successful membership of the Pilot’s Federation.

We have been so notified of said acceptance, following your grading in the recruitment aptitude exams, and so are carrying out this transaction in the manner as specified by our client’s wishes.

The package is two-fold. Encoded into this transmission is the first part: a secure code. Use this code to access a starship account, pre-configured with your credentials, including a fully paid, indefinite lease, and comprehensive insurance cover. The second part of the package is a credit transfer to your personal account, which I can confirm was successfully completed at the time this transmission was dispatched.

The attached message was also to be delivered to you upon receipt of the access code. We feel this matter has now been resolved to the satisfaction of all parties concerned. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us. The normal fees of one thousand two hundred credits (1200 CR) per hour (plus Federal Service Tax) apply, plus a one off initial contact fee of five thousand credits (5000 CR).

You may be puzzled right now as to why you’ve just received this little windfall. Nothing wrong with that – I’d be worried if you weren’t.

But now get ready for lesson number one. When a golden opportunity comes your way – and trust me, they’re few and far between, my friend – reach out and grab it with both hands. Sometimes it’s clever to ask questions, and sometimes it’s not. This time it’s not.

All you need to know is that my organisation has a very specific remit: to seek out those who have the potential to become real movers and shakers, those precious few with the talent to mould and shape the galaxy around them, to create change on a grand scale.

We find them, and then we test them. Consider this your test.

Take the ship. Take the money. No strings, no hidden clauses. Do with them what you will.

Blaze your own trail.

The Sidewinder's two Class 1 hardpoints are located in front of and just below the cockpit, on the ship's frontal surface. The cockpit itself has only a single pilot seat, and the Sidewinder cannot utilise Multicrew.

*The official Elite Dangerous Player's Guide explains the lore behind why players start with a loaned Sidewinder: "Every player starts as a new member of the Pilots Federation. After being notified of your successful membership a secret benefactor has a transmission delivered to you with a secure code. It gives you access to a starship account that's preconfigured with your credentials. This is how you gain an indefinitely loaned and insured Sidewinder.
