I thought stations as a term meant the coriolis, ocellus, and orbis, as all of them are identified in game as stations (on the contact tab with the hull and shield info, and on the main hud on target info). Outposts, which don't have large size landing pads, are identified in game as outposts (in the same info locations as listed above).

Because of the above, I would favor starports being used for planetary based landing pads, or however they are termed in game once horizons is released.
